In 1986 movie Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold. Actress Cassandra Peterson plays as villainess Sorais. 1980s movie with a gorgeous villainess, this one should be fun.
The music in this movie is really good, in modern movies, the music is often sound like farts, or doesn't fit the action.
I never seen this movie before, so, what I like about it can't be nostalgia, but it looks good, like modern movies feels like it was filmed by a mobile camera, this one have a total different feeling of authenticity, also the costumes and the lighting, it just look beautiful.
Ok, WTF, isn't this movie is supposed to be in Africa, and somehow the market in the movie is full of people dressed as Arabs, like what's next, some penguins lost in the jungle!!
The level of talent in this movie, the lighting, like that's how movies should look like, not like the modern CGI generated mass-produced clones.
Around 30 minutes, the effects in this movie are amazing, it's so awesome.. Like imagine, in what 40 years, we went from this to modern AI-compatible Hollywood trash!!
Around 38 minutes, The hero was hit by a spear and I laughed, like the actor with holding it with his hands to keep it from falling LOL.
But plot twist, he was wearing a shirt that can bend metal or some shit, and the hero went like "They are saying I'm the devil", well, the way I heard it, they were saying "Retard" repeatedly, they just have an accent, dude!!
The effects in this movie is between looks amazing even today, and looked really good for its time.
Using practical effects for the monsters in the cave around 50 minutes is just amazing, I love it.
The movie is from the 80s, and it's obviously a colonial propaganda of the time, and the way they portray Arabs just prove my point, so, yeah, the movie aged like milk on that regard, doesn't mean it can't be fun, till now the parts I enjoyed the most are the practical effects, they are awesome in the movie.
One hour in and still we didn't see our gorgeous villainess which is unfortunate, she should've played a main role in the movie early on. Shortly after the heroes reach the city of gold, we see our stunning villainess, and apparently, the main villain can turn everything into gold by putting it in a gold water or something, his evil laugh around 1 hour 7 minutes was fun.
We see our villainess once more around 1 hour 9 minutes when she and Agon convince Swarma of betraying the heroes, exploiting his greed and love for gold, personally, I would sell out the heroes in a second just to win Sorais over πππ.
Our villainess last fight starts around 1 hour 33 minutes..
Now, what I love and hate about the movie, let's start with what I hate.
I said the movie is obviously a colonialist propaganda, like the moral superior colonist fighting the morally inferior, so, while the movie show Agon and Sorais as resourceful, powerful, compelling villains, who despite how primitive their world is, they manged to be on top, and find out a way to challenge the hero who has more advanced tech, on the other hand, with the native people, they lack any individualism, they are either too dumb, so incapable, and basically lost their agency and can be easily used, tricked and exploited. It's different from Legionnaire, that even that the movie also have a collective villains but towards the end not only they were capable villains, they also manged to defeat the hero, and more importantly they kind of showing a different morals that would even can be considered superior to the heroes morals, they basically said "You fought us with courage, and we admired that, so we will spare you" and such moral code wouldn't be even applied if the hero was in their place, so that's how different the two movies are, so basically in Legionnaire, they were resourceful, charismatic, powerful and capable, that's the difference.
Other thing I didn't like is how the main villains were basically absent for most of the movie, our villainess rarely said anything in the entire movie, it felt like the movie needed more time, or be in two parts, or be more like a TV series, it just felt like watching two halfs of two movies.
Now what I loved about the movie, the villainess of course, and the practical effects, the camera work, and the music, they were awesome, the movie also looks great, you can see an artist behind it.
It's a fun movie yet it feels incomplete, it would be better if it ended with them reaching the city of gold after suffering in their adventure to finally reach their destination then make another movie with the second part.
Sadly, the actor Henry Silva the one playing the main villain and also Gary Nelson the director of the movie just passed away thank you both, we miss you and love you πππ.
